Making the Test Movie: For Sale By Superhero

imageThe Amazon Studios development process is visual, from comic books to “test movies” videos that help an audience imagine what a story would be like as a feature film. Here’s the story of For Sale By Superhero, a new test movie now available to watch for free at Amazon and Amazon Studios.

Like a lot of people, Brett Jubinville has been a fan of costumed crime-fighters since he was a kid: “I’ve been into superheroes since I was about 10 years old, when I would steal my brother’s [Todd] McFarlane Spiderman comics.” Which is why he was so excited to direct the For Sale By Superhero test movie for Amazon Studios. “I think everyone to a certain degree is into superheroes, but in our industry, the opportunity to work on a superhero movie…is really exciting.” Especially one that features a new character.

Jubinville is a character designer who – along with Morghan Fortier, an animation series line producer – formed Tinman Creative located in Toronto, Canada, after working together for more than five years on projects for other studios. Amazon Studios brought Tinman on board to design and create a test movie, a full-length animatic designed to show what For Sale By Superhero might look like as a film. “This really appealed to us because we like to work in a variety of different styles,” Jubinville said. “Either that, or we just get bored easy!”

For Sale By Superhero is a story about a family that’s gone through a lot of changes: Dad lost his job, Mom’s back to work, and they’ve moved into a run-down house that (unbeknownst to them) used to belong to a superhero. The Grim Avenger has died, but his supercomputer is still up and running – and looking for a new hero.   “It’s like if you were to move into Wayne Manor not knowing who Bruce Wayne is and suddenly you discover the bat cave” explains Brett.Jim the father has to come to grips with everything that is happening to him in his personal life and rise to the challenge of this superhero persona he has stumbled upon.”
